“Troughs and Scarps in Planum Australe”
This image of the south polar layered deposits (SPLD) was taken by HiRISE on April 30th, 2009 (72.800° S, 134.871° E). Similar to outcrops in Greenland and Antarctica on Earth, it is believed that the climate record of Mars can be deciphered by looking at the layers in this region. The cause of the texture in this image is still uncertain, but it likely originates from long ago when temperatures were higher and the ice flowed much faster.
The width of this image is about 1 km.
