Up the airy mountain,
Down the rushy glen,
We daren’t go a-hunting,
For fear of little men;
— William Allingham – The Fairies
The Little People
Okay now, before you giggle…
Consider the fact that in 1850 – when the Scot, William Allingham penned his famous poem, the fear of little men was a very serious subject that impacted daily life. Even preventing men on horseback with firearms from going hunting to fill their bellies. That could be considered significant, methinks.
I have not yet encountered a little person. Given the poem I am usually of the opinion that this is likely a good thing, but I do note that according to JC Johnson’s findings these lil guys are not only still around and being seen but are indeed found all over the globe and not just found in Yurrop… as the impression might surely have taken hold from readings such as that poem.
JC mentioned the Hobbits, Homo florensiensis, found in the islands of the Asian / Australian area of the Pacific, but I am thinking that those are not the right guys, as we only have ancient remains which appear to be rare and there was recently a decision by the boffins that they are not on our branch of the tree at all, not that that latter bit matters a whole lot, but still…
At any rate, I’m of the opinion (currently) that the little men are a different critter all together and – one that is apparently still around and causing the occasional ruckus.
I think we should find out one way or another.
I apologize for the brevity of my posts, but I just don’t have the resource of time at hand these days…bear with me.
