Many of the Dutch related Drivers used Orange on their Helmets. which was originally Holland’s National Historic Colour. Later Jody S just reversed his Helmet Colour to white with an Orange Band !

Louis Galanos‎ > Historic Racing Cars

The legendary Corvette racer John Greenwood, in his 7-liter Vette, leads the legendary Porsche 917K racer Pedro Rodriguez under the MG Bridge and into the Esses at Sebring fifty years ago (1970) this weekend. Following them is the Jacky Ickx – Peter Schetty works Ferrari 512 S Spyder and the Jerry Thompson – John Mahler Corvette. Greenwood and co-driver Allan Barker would fail to finish due to a busted clutch. Rodriguez and co-driver Leo Kinnunen and later Jo Siffert would finish 4th overall but were leading late in the race when a faulty part sidelined them. The Ferrari would blow a head gasket and the Thompson/Mahler Vette would finish 20th.

BTW, that historic MG Bridge was in sad shape in 1970 and anyone who crossed the track via that bridge held their breath as the metal span undulated as people walked across the track. It would collapse in a storm in 1973 just days before the running of the 1973 race.

Here’s Why Frua May Have Designed The Prettiest BMW 2002

During an eleven year production lifetime, the iconic BMW 2002 Series introduced some of the marque’s most memorable cars. From sporty coupes, convertibles, tourers, and turbo-powered rally monsters, the 2002 series provided what was truly a lineup that had something for everyone. However, on this year’s Hamburg to Berlin Klassik, I got a closer look at the 2002 GT4 Frua: the very car that could have changed the face of the 2002 series from the one we remember.

Designed by Pietro Frua in 1969 as a potential 2002 model, the GT4 was a fastback 2+2 coupe built on the underpinnings of a 2002ti. Although based on the 2002, it also brought together styling from multiple BMW products including an interior largely lifted from the 2500 sedan, with its instrument cluster dominated by two large dials, and both indicators and door handles from the 2800CS.

Two examples of the GT4 with slight variations were produced and unveiled by BMW at the Paris Motor Shows of 1969 and 1970. Unfortunately the GT4 would not make it to series production, BMW opting to proceed with a touring design which would enter the market in 1971. Today, the 1970 Paris Motor Show concept remains in original condition and under the care of BMW Group Classic. However, on the back roads from Hamburg to Berlin, we were given the opportunity to see the GT4 on the road where it can be truly appreciated.

With its 1,200-cc, 40-brake horsepower, in-line four-cylinder engine, the 1930 Henderson Model KJ Streamline could exceed 100 mph. In an era when streamlining was used sparingly in motorcycle design, American Orley Ray Courtney’s enclosed bodywork was virtually unknown on production two-wheelers (except for a few racing machines), making the KJ an unusual and beautiful example of Art Deco design.

Courtney believed that the motorcycle industry failed to provide weather protection and luxury for its riders. His radically streamlined KJ body shell was unlike anything ever done on two wheels. The sleek vehicle had a curved, vertical-bar grille, reminiscent of the Chrysler Airflow, and the rear resembled an Auburn boat-tail speedster. The panels were hand-formed of steel with a power hammer.

Stunningly beautiful but impractical and hard to ride, the Streamline’s complex curved body was heavy and was difficult to make. In 1941, Courtney filed for a patent for a second motorcycle design with fully enclosed fenders. Perhaps he was influenced by the fact that the Indian Motocycle Company had introduced its partially skirted fenders in 1940, and that motorcyclists were becoming more accepting of this trend.*

* In 1923, Indian Motorcycle Company became Indian Motocycle Company and retained that name until the company closed in 1953.

The No. 99 Ferrari was an entry by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team, an independent with intimate factory ties, based here in my hometown of Greenwich, Connecticut. They won Le Mans that year.

So, swoons all ‘round, eh…
